What are the indicators of development in children up to 5 years?

Developmental milestones are the things that children are capable of doing when they are a certain age. Meet the most common.

When we have a baby, we worry if he is gaining weight or if he is within the percentile . But there are other signs to which we must also pay attention to know if our children acquire the skills that correspond to them with respect to their age. We talk about developmental milestones, that is, the things that children are capable of doing when they are a certain age .

The way little ones act, play, learn or talk are indicators of basic development. In this article we will focus on milestones from birth to age 5, but before we begin it is important to remember that each child develops at their own pace . Therefore, the capacities that we will indicate are indicative.

DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS UP TO 5 YEARS

From 0 to 12 months

First month

During the first month of life, babies cry to indicate that they are hungry, sleepy, or upset. At first they only wake up to eat, but as the days go by, they react to the light, focus their eyes, look at the people who speak to them, grasp tightly what we place in their little hand (surely you remember the first time that your baby took your finger), they suck, we bring something to their mouth, they move their head, arms and legs, they take their arm in the same direction in which they turn their head, etc.

Second month

Around week 6 , they usually smile when someone speaks sweetly to them or caresses them. They are also capable of making sounds, of following objects with their eyes, of putting their thumb in their mouth and sucking on it.

Third month

What is most striking during that month is the baby’s ability to move his head. If you lay him face down, he picks it up, when you pick him up, it doesn’t go back as much and if he hears a noise, he turns it to that side. He also reacts when spoken to, either by focusing his attention on her or by making a sound. As for the movements, these begin to be intentional. For example, he opens and closes his hands, moves his arms or paws when he is awake.

Fourth month

The movement is already constant, so extreme care must be taken so that the child does not fall. Other development indicators to watch for in month 4 :

  • Grab objects with hands and move them.
  • He is able to hold his feet.
  • Holds his head.
  • He looks at his hands.
  • If you place it upside down, it rests on your hands.
  • Face up, lean forward.
  • It spins on itself.
  • He laughs when we listen to him and talk to him.

Fifth month

Month number 5 arrives and with it a change in behavior. Until now your son did not protest if he was picked up by a stranger, he even smiled at him if they spoke to him. But from now on he may cry if he doesn’t recognize the person holding him . One of the funniest things is that it already emits sounds that include some letter: “aha”, “ma”, “ahhh”… (my son first said “ea”, because my mother always told him to put him to sleep “hey, hey, hey”). Unlike the previous month, the child is no longer limited to picking up objects and moving them. Now he can put them in his mouth. Another interesting thing: he discovers the mirrors and they almost seem to recognize themselves.

Sixth month

Some children are more precocious, but the first teeth usually begin to appear around the sixth month . Therefore, we should not be surprised if they are more irritable. Two signs that the tooth is erupting are drooling and putting everything they pick up into their mouths. More development indicators to highlight:

  • The baby supports the back, so we can sit him in the high chair.
  • If you put it upright, move your legs as if to walk.
  • He is able to turn around while lying down.
  • Try to put your feet in your mouth.
  • He throws his arms out for you to pick him up.

Seventh month

It’s only been a few days, but its development has skyrocketed. What can a child with 7 months do ?

  • Sit down.
  • Lying on your stomach, raise your torso and extend your arms to pick up objects.
  • It reaches everything around it, so now is the time to remove dangerous objects from its reach.
  • He understands many things we say to him.
  • Link two syllables.
  • Some babies already crawl.

Eighth month

8-month -old babies miss their parents when they are away and are afraid of strangers. You will notice that they are already trying to stand up and some manage to stay upright if they hold on to something. Your son may even surprise you with his first word from him. Is it “dad” or “mom”?

Ninth month

In addition to everything he has accomplished in the past few weeks, he now imitates sounds, claps his hands, yells when you ignore him, points when he wants something, and pinches his thumb and forefinger .

tenth month

He says hello, looks at his father or mother and calls them, knows what “no” means , can pick up small objects, walks with help… Development indicators skyrocket.

month 11

What happens when the baby is about to turn one year old? Well, we can practically already know what she needs because her body language is easily understandable. She already calls “dad” or “mommy”, understands short instructions , can put objects in containers, imitates certain actions and some already walk on their own.

The first year

If your child isn’t walking alone by the time he’s 12 months old, he will be at any time. So be careful what you leave within reach. When he wants something, he demands it by pointing, imitates gestures, expands his vocabulary, can drink from a glass and can pick up a spoon with his hand.

Developmental milestones at 2 years

By the time a baby is two years old, they are already saying a minimum of 50 words and can link two meaningful words together . “I want water”, for example. Parents already understand most of what our children say and we know when they want something or not, because they make it very clear to us.

Their social skills range from choosing the things they want to refusing to do something or getting angry when they disagree with something. Soon the tantrums will come.

As for cognitive abilities, they can mimic actions with their toys . They give the doll a bottle, pick up a round object and pretend to drive, get on all fours and imitate a dog, etc. They can also find an object that we have hidden from them.

And his psychomotricity? They run, kick the ball, push the tricycle, etc.

Development indicators at 3 years

At 3 years old they start school, so they acquire many more skills. They already form sentences with several words, their vocabulary includes more than 500 words , they know their names and say it when someone asks them, practically everything they say is understood, they can follow daily routines, they wait their turn to play or to speak, do puzzles, draw simple geometric shapes, can turn the pages of books one at a time, are able to climb, go up and down stairs alternating feet, etc.

Child development milestones: 4 years

When children turn 4 years old they already speak very well, with long sentences. In addition, they can answer questions, express their preferences , use their imagination in games, help other children and begin to write.

Before they finish second year of Infantile they will be able to write their name and the letters that we tell them. They will also have begun to use scissors and will be able to jump on one foot or catch balls to the bounce.

Development indicators at 5 years

At the age of 5, children can already do a lot of things: they understand rhymes, they build sentences in which they include several details, they know their first and last names, they can use the future tense, they understand the rules of games, they distinguish between a circle , a square and a triangle or they know what the different objects are for , among many other skills.
